The Correct Way to Shave Your Face

How to shave your facial hair and tips for grooming

This might seem like a pretty obvious topic and that everyone already knows this. . . .But, If it was that obvious, why would it be amongst the top 10 "How to's" google searched last year?

So if you are a young adult learning to shave or have been shaving for decades and wanting to know if you have been doing it right, here is step by step solution to a simple yet important how-to :

Shaving works best in front of  a mirror be sure to use one

  1. Trim your beard with clippers if you are starting off with a longer beard. You can use a standard electric clipper but I must recommend a beard trimmer like philips' Multigroom
kit. The beard trimmers have adjustable settings for hair length and different clip ons for various grooming styles I use one and it's awesome ! If you are looking for that fashionable stubble and 5'0 clock shadow look this is the only step you will have to follow easy and great.
  2. Get your face warm and moist. This would be easiest accomplished if you were to start shaving when you come straight out of the shower. If you are not the shave after shower type warm water from the bathroom basin will be fine splash your face with the warm water (not boiling hot water please !) so not too hot.
  3. (Optional step) Use an Exfoliant face wash or any other facial wash. You can do this with step 2 for better skin care purposes.
  4. Have your shaving kit ready! Right after the warm wash. You want to shave when your face is warm and ready otherwise the steps above are useless. Don't give your mane the chance to dry up and pores to close.
  5. Soak your Razor. If you are using a disposable razor soak it in cold water in the basin , you may  use hot water but (5th grade science alert) metal blades expand in heat leaving your blade less effective.
  6. Apply some shaving oil first before shaving cream. This step is vital because this is what helps prevent your face from becoming skinned alive or really damaged. If you don't have shaving oil some soap works for me as well (the liquid one not the bar, like your wife said the bar is a bad place to go).
  7. Apply the shaving cream with a shaving brush. It has a way better effect on your skin than just using your finger tips to do this. If you don't have something like shaving cream or shaving gel, you can use conditioner. I haven't tried it but lots of similar posts recommend this and I don't seethe harm in this.
  8. Make sure you use a good quality blade. Your beard deserve to be killed in style. The better the blade the better your shave. Keep in mind your the more sensitive your skin the blades of your razor should be more (2,3,4 maybe even 5 blades).
  9. Remember shave with the grain of your beard. In other words the same way your hair is growing , if the hang downwards you shave downwards. if you you don't do this they will grow back inwards and you ain't shaving jack squat then.
  10. Pick a side of your face. Start with one side doing little strokes and sections at a time and work your way to the other side. Getting exactly half-way would be a fun time to take a selfie (meaning a picture of yourself).
  11. Rinse off your face then check and feel for spots you have missed. Don't skip this step and yes its possible to miss you are human after all, find piece and let it go (pun intended). check jawline and neck as well as sideburns and near nostrils
  12. After touch ups rinse again and then pat-dry your face with a clean soft towel.
  13. Apply some shaving balm. Use a non-alcoholic balm !! unless you like a furnace face then use a alcohol based balm. There are plenty of good shaving balms out there, find the right one for you.
  14. Soothe the spots you have nicked or cut by washing it with cold water. The spots that still bleed should have small tissue paper or moist kitchen paper applied to them.
  15. Buy and use a styptic pencil if you are susceptible to nicks and cuts. If you are using a styptic pencil be sure to wet it and rub over the nick are or cut. The material of the pencil closes off the blood vessels to the nick or cut stopping it from bleeding.

  16. Take care of your shaving gear. Rinse off and clean all that needs to be cleaned and store it neatly so that it is ready to go for the next shave session. Clean equipment will ensure you don't get a nasty skin infection.

Some useful tips

  • You need a good sharp bladed (blades) razor.
  • You need a shaving brush, preferably one made of badger’s hair, because that’s the only fiber that will carry water from the sink up to your face to give you the best lather.
  • Remember to shave with the grain !
  • Use short strokes.
  • If you can feel the razor rubbing against your face your shaving cream has failed its single purpose.
  • When shaving with soap use an ivory bar of soap.
  • Put a little bit of shampoo on the mirror in the shower if you shave in the shower, this will prevent it from fogging up.
  • Shave often to prevent hairs from thickening.

Lose Weight the Fast and Healthy Way

You don't have to starve yourself to lose weight; in fact, you shouldn't. Check out this article for some tips on how to diet, control your metabolism, and lose the right amount of weight in a short period of time, the healthy way.

Steps

  1. Set out small but good goals. Having huge targets will end up no where. So the best way is trying to reduce 5 pounds first or just 1 1/2 pounds a week.
  2. Think practically. Think some practical ways to lose weight like using the stairs instead of the elevator or parking your car in the far corner of the parking lot and walk the distance, etc.

  3. Instead of the traditional 3 meals a day, eat only when you are actually hungry, and eat what you like but try to be healthy. Avoid eating anything 3 hours before sleeping.

  4. Avoid eating/drinking any caffeine past 4:30 in the afternoon. This will make it so by the time you go to bed you are tired enough to go to sleep.

  5. sleep
at least 7-8 hours a night.
    This will boost your metabolism.

  6. Avoid chocolate, cake, brownies, potato chips, ice cream, fizzy drinks or any junk food.

  7. Never starve yourself. It shuts down your metabolism which is a major process to help you lose
weight. It also makes you feel woozy, tired, and makes you hungrier and your weight-loss plan unsustainable.

  8. Avoid sodas or juices that contain a lot of sugar. Instead try 100% fruit juice, tea, or water.

  9. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, especially if you feel like snacking or for dessert. Note that some plants such as corns, avocado, banana, coconut, contain much higher calories than others. You don't need to avoid all the high calories plants but just don't think you can eat them as much as you want.

  10. Aim to eat 'good carbs' (which have a low glycemic index) such as brown rice, oatmeal, wholewheat or 12-grain bread and wholewheat pasta, carb-balance (high fiber) tortillas. (Avoid white foods: white bread, potatoes, sugary foods, flour tortillas, white pasta, and fried foods.) Try not to have carbs after 5pm as any unused carbs will likely be stored as fat overnight, negating your morning bike session.

  11. Don’t forget about exercising
    !
When trying to lose weight, some people can get so wrapped up in cutting calories and portion sizes that they forget about the importance of exercise. If it's hard to maintain or start an exercise routine, use each Monday as the day to recommit to eating right and exercising. Take part in a Monday Mile, enroll in a fitness class, or make a schedule to exercise for the week. Healthy Monday is a national non-profit, public health campaign that encourages people to use Monday as the day for all things healthy.

  12. Consider using "high intensity interval training" such as sprinting "all out" for reaching 85% to 90% of your maximum, safe heart rate, about 10 to 20 seconds (a track sprinter can run 100 meters in approx. 10 seconds). Rest a minute or 90 seconds -- and then do another dash. Repeating several times.

  13. Maintain a steady intake of protein, aiming for a minimum of 'your body weight in pounds' (in grams) of protein. If you would like to build a bit of muscle, double that, and begin some weight
training. This will supercharge your metabolism and greatly increase your body's fat-burning ability.

  14. Ride on a cardio exercise bike
(do aerobics) for at least 20-30 minutes for each session.
This is because the body takes time to deplete its glycogen stores and switch to a fat burning environment. Exercising for less than 20-30 minutes doesn't help much on burning fat.

  15. Try to do cardio exercises immediately after waking up, as you have had no food in your system all night, and therefore the first place your body will get energy from is the fat stores (not the muscles because you are using them). Bear in mind that after the bike, wait about 20 minutes and then eat a solid breakfast so your body knows you are not starving (that would be detrimental to the cause).

  16. Wake up at a normal hour like 7:00, or 8:00 or 9:00, if you are pushing it. Go to bed before midnight: your body needs at least 8 hours of sleep to function the right way.
  17. Eat breakfast each morning. Eating something in the morning gets your metabolism going and helps prevent your binge eating later in the day.

  18. Drink plenty of water, and cut down on carbonated beverages, particularly those with a lot of sugar. Try to not drink any soda.

  19. Mental Fitness. Mentality is playing a major role in losing weight. Don't think about 'how you gained weight' or 'why are you fat & ugly'. Just close your eyes with a relaxed mind & think that you are going to work on losing weight. Go to the mirror & say 'hey you've lose a little weight.' (But you must work on it to lose weight, thinking alone is not enough though.)

Tips

  • Remember not to eat anything right before bed because whatever food you eat stores in your body as fat.
  • Quit beverages with sugar. A glass of coke contains 8-10 teaspoons of sugar. Try water, tea, black coffee.
  • Try not to eat after 8:00. If you get hungry, snack on low-fructose fruits or vegetables.
  • Try not to eat at fast food restaurants, as their food is full of fat and calories. However, if you do choose fast food, stick to the healthier end of the menu. Most places are adding a variety of salad and fruit options to their menus but corn in butter and salad with mayo (95% oil) are definitely not your choice.
  • Don't be fooled by "low fat", "less sugar", "low calories" label. Read any consumer reports to understand how misleading those labels could be.
  • Keep the veggies near the front of the fridge. That way, when you open the fridge, you see the veggies first.
  • Peer pressure can be important to some people. Look for a friend who also needs to lose weight and set weight-losing targets together.
  • Remember that 1 pound of fat is 3500 calories. However, one ice cream cone and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter is 500 calories.
  • Get your whole family involved, because if the family doesn't change their eating, you will have difficult times avoiding those sweets and etc

Warnings

  • If you change everything immediately, you are going to crave things and over eat. Do this in a slow process. Remember that you are aiming for a permanent change, not a quick fix.
  • Don't try to drop weight quickly. Your body resists quick weight loss and tries to retain its stored fat. Trick your body into losing the weight by doing it gradually.
  • Beware of foods selling themselves as "diet" or "healthy" choices. The packaging will often tell you some good news (low fat!) and ignore some very bad news (incredibly high sugar!). When in doubt, nothing is better than an apple.
  • When exercising for the first time, don't overdo it. If you put too much pressure on yourself right away, you risk burning out or even injuring yourself. You're much more likely to keep up healthy habits if you work them in gradually and steadily.
  • Don't starve yourself because if you do so your body will become tired and will not function properly.
